Using Social Media in Ministry

Released: Nov 11, 2010

Social media is quite a buzz now a days. If you don’t post, tweet or tag, you probably aren’t linked-in to the social media world. If you’re not, chances are you know someone who is. Facebook has over 500 million active users, half of which actively use Facebook in any given day. The average user has 130 friends. Twitter has over 24 million unique visitors per month, with 50 million tweets per day – that’s 600 tweets per second! People are connecting like never before because of these websites.

Wooddale Church, The Gathering, Faith Matters® and Faith Minute® have all entered the social media world with Facebook pages and Twitter accounts. “Wooddale Church is using social media as a way to inform people about ways to get connected. But more important, social media is a great outreach tool,” said Communications Director Brian Anderson. “Our goal is to get people connected through social media and start conversations about how God is working in their lives.”

Getting connected is easy and user friendly. For those with Facebook accounts, just click “Like” on our Facebook pages (facebook.com/wooddalechurch or facebook.com/wooddalegathering). You will then receive regular status updates that you can share with your Facebook friends, make comments or ask questions. It a great way to know what’s happening here and provides an easy way to share what’s going on at Wooddale with your friends.
Twitter provides a rich source of instantly updated information. For those familiar with Twitter, you can follow a number of Wooddale ministries: @wooddalechurch, @gatheringep, @faithmatters and @faithminute. It’s also a great way to follow @leithanderson.

“These are free tools that we can use to inform people about Wooddale,” said Wooddale Webmaster Kaynen Heikkinen. “It’s an effective way for communication and connecting and reconnecting others with Wooddale.”

Wooddale Church suggests that discretion and accountability are used while on the internet. There are some wonderful things about the internet as well as things that are not used for God’s glory. Wooddale is engaging in this medium as a way to provide good information and to use it as a way to make more disciples for Jesus Christ.
